Biography
Sam Stourdzé is the Director of La Villa Medicis in Rome
He is a specialist of photography and his research focuses on the image’s production environments, dissemination and reception. For several years Sam Stourdzé studied the mechanisms of the circulation of images, focuses on the relationship between photography and cinema. He has organized lots of international exhibitions and published several books and catalogs, which include The Cliché -Verre de Corot to Man Ray Les retrospectives of Dorothea Lange and Tina Modotti, or Chaplin et les images images and Fellini 's Grand Parade at Le Jeu de Paume.
Before La Villa Médicis, he was the Director of Les Rencontres de la photographie d'Arles and Director of the Musée de l'Elysée. He was a former resident of Villa Medicis - Académie de France in Rome and a member of the Board of the Institute for Research and Innovation (IRI) of the Centre Pompidou. He is also a board member of the Swiss Foundation for Photography (Fotostiftung, Winterthur) of the French Society of Photography, and Guidance Council of the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation.
