You don't have to go to the other side of the world to enjoy island life: in mainland France alone, some 130 islands and islets (some inhabited, some not) are available to the curious. From Oléron to Groix, via Noirmoutier, Porquerolles and many others, there's no shortage of opportunities to feel isolated - in the best sense of the word - in the middle of the waves, whether in the Mediterranean or on the Atlantic seaboard.
