The Festa da Menina-Moça is an important rite of passage in the Guajajara culture, whose more encompassing self-denomination is Tenetehára, meaning “true people”. One of the largest original peoples in Brazil, the Guajajara spread throughout more than ten indigenous lands situated in the margins of Eastern Amazônia, in Maranhão, where they face issues such as illegal logging exploitation and poachers. The photography vividly and colorfully captures the moment when the girls are recognized as young women by their community.
