L'ile de Valaam est située à environ 300 km au nord de Saint-Pétersbourg sur le lac Ladoga. Entre 1940 et 1989, l'ile fut utilisée à des fins militaires. Depuis la restauration du monastère de la transfiguration, celui-ci attire de nombreux pèlerins Orthodoxes russes.
