This photograph of ammodyte viper (Vipera ammodytes) was taken in December 2019 at the Parc Zoologique de Paris. I had come to do a completely different photo subject when I came across two specimens in full courtship. The scene was absolutely beautiful, the two scaly lovers intertwining each other in a ballet of sometimes hypnotic rhythm. I took the opportunity to do some macro photographs like this one. I wanted to highlight the beauty and grace of these animals, sometimes unjustly unloved and yet so essential to the good balance of our environment. Snakes play an essential role in the ecosystems in which they evolve. In particular, they regulate certain populations of insects or small rodents which can be the source of damage to agricultural crops, for example. And their role in the food chain does not stop there since they are also a food resource for species of birds and mammals. Like many snakes, the ammodyte viper (Vipera ammodytes) is largely endangered due to habitat destruction and extensive persecution. And like any other living species on Earth, it deserves to be respected and preserved.
