Biography
Born in 1985, Guillaume MARTIAL is a French visual artist, photographer and videographer.
After 10 years of ice sports during his childhood, Guillaume MARTIAL studied
audiovisual and moving image studies. He studied the history of silent cinema, in dialogue
with his practice of the body in space. In 2009, he spent some time on the set of
Jour de Fête, Jacques Tati's first feature film. This decisive event
led him to stage a character that he himself interprets in the tradition of
burlesque cinema. In 2013, he took part in the photographic project France(s) Territoires
Liquides, published by Le Seuil and exhibited at the Tri Postal in Lille in 2014. Guillaume
MARTIAL received the HSBC Prize for Photography in 2015 and published the monograph
Slap-Stick published by Actes Sud. He takes part in numerous exhibitions, notably at

Esther Woerdehoff, the Bogota Museum of Modern Art, Paris Photo, the Catherine Edelman
Catherine Edelman in Chigago, or at the BnF in the exhibition Paysages français, une
aventure photographique in 2017. His work is part of several public collections
including the Musée Nicéphore Niépce and the Fond Départemental d'Art Contemporain
de Dordogne. He pursues his research through artist residencies and creative commissions.
