Black Mother, or "Mãe preta" in Portuguese, is the story of an encounter with the Ilú Obá De Min troupe in São Paulo's Historic Centre. Ilú Obá De Min means "the female hands that play the drum for Xangô" in Yoruba. The term Yoruba refers to a language, a religion, and a people from West Africa who paid a heavy price during the slave trade. (Xangô represents the orixá of lightning, fire, thunder, and justice). Many were deported to Brazil as slaves. Today, Afro-descendant peoples in Brazil face various forms of violence within Brazilian society. Ilú Obá De Min is reinventing a space for collective memory, sharing, and preserving black culture in Brazil.
