Opened in 1935, the Rivesaltes camp first "welcomed" Spanish refugees fleeing the civil war. A few years later it was the turn of the Harkis to be interned in terrible sanitary conditions. After several years of abandonment and under the impetus of survivors' associations, the camp was classified as a national memorial and a museum was inaugurated in 2015.
