Biography
Gabi Ben Avraham is an Israeli photographer, he lives in Tel Aviv and works in a software company. After flirting with an initial fascination with photography and film cameras in the 1980's, he went on to pursue a career as an IT manager and put his love for the still image aside.
While the passion lay dormant for decades, all it took was the gift of a camera from his wife to awaken his inclination towards photography again.
Street Photography/Documentary is his favorite way of looking at the world. But the Street is not a Studio, so sometimes he stands and waits for things to converge – a cyclist, a dancer, a child – moving along.
Like a fisherman who goes to his daily work without knowing what he will catch, he takes his camera and dives into the streets without knowing what will happen few minutes later, it is an adventure. Everywhere he goes he takes his camera with him thinking ‘maybe today will be my lucky day and I will take the photo of my life’. Via the camera lens he is constantly looking around him, searching for that ‘decisive’ moment that will never return, unless he catches it.
He tries to see the surreal and to sort things out of their everyday meaning and their usual context. He has his favorite places and he never comes back with the same photos. It is always different.
He creates a private and intimate hallucination in order to share with the viewer. Even though the moment fades, it is burnt in the memory of the viewer.
He shoots independently for a few years and teaches in Street Photography workshops.
He is a member of the collectif "Thestreetcollective", founded in 2013, encouraging street photography in general, and offer up and coming street photographers the opportunity to share projects with a larger audience.
